With a mission to honor donors’ final wishes and advance medical science through cadaveric study, the Anatomical Donor Program is a vital component of Georgetown University’s medical school curriculum. The program plays a crucial role in supporting the educational development of future doctors by integrating cadaveric studies into their training.
The Embalmer/Lab Operations Assistant holds a key role within the Anatomical Donor Program, providing essential administrative and tactical support to help nurture the next generation of medical professionals. This position offers the incumbent a unique and valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of anatomical sciences. Additionally, it provides a meaningful way to assist community members in Washington, D.C., and the surrounding areas in fulfilling their final wishes to contribute to medical education. In this role, the Embalmer/Lab Operations Assistant is responsible for delivering comprehensive administrative and operational support to the Operations Manager for the School of Medicine’s anatomy lab and Anatomical Donor Program. Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Manage cadaver intake and support cadaver embalming, ensuring that all procedures are conducted with the utmost respect and in accordance with legal and ethical standards.
- Set up and support anatomy labs for various curricular activities, in partnership with course directors and related faculty, ensuring all necessary equipment and materials are prepared and available.
- Monitor lab supplies and resources, ensuring labs are adequately stocked, sanitized, and available for use.
- Assist with the tracking and management of cadaver intake and use during educational study, maintaining accurate records and documentation throughout the entirety of processing and study.
- Support the planning and coordination of events related to the anatomical donor program, including donor recognition ceremonies and educational outreach activities.
Work Interactions
The incumbent engages with a diverse array of stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, donors, external vendors, and partner programs.
Requirements and Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Licensed DC Funeral Director, or the ability to obtain a DC license within 6 months
- Embalming experience
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift heavy objects (at least 50 pounds)
- Comfort working with deceased bodies and in environments that may involve exposure to chemicals and biological hazards
- Strong ability to work independently, attention to detail, and organizational skills
- Computer proficiency; including Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel
- Two years of experience in customer service or client-facing role
- High-level time management skills and ability to manage shifting priorities
- Apprenticeship or internship experience preferred

Pay Range:
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$47,586.00 – $87,558.13
Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.

Thacker Brothers Funeral Home is a family-owned business with two locations and has been serving the community since 1922. We are seeking a Licensed Funeral Director & Embalmer for the position of General Manager. This is a frontline management position, meaning you will also interact with client families for arrangements/services, and share responsibilities such as transfers, embalming, and rotating weekend/on-call hours.
Responsibilities:
- Arrange and direct all activities relating to transfers, funerals, visitations, and cremation services including preparation of funeral home facilities and equipment, embalming and preparation of deceased, crematory operations, and on-call responsibilities
- Supervise the administrative and support services of the funeral home such as trade services, building and vehicle repair services, oversight of funeral home expenditures and collection of receivables
- Ensure vehicles, buildings, facilities, and grounds are maintained in a clean, manicured, and working order
- Ensure all safety, quality control, and compliance standards are adhered to by staff
- Plan and implement strategies to increase the client base for the company including direct involvement in marketing strategies, improvement of internal business practices, and preneed/aftercare programs
- Maintain a positive environment so that employees are motivated to strive for performance excellence and achievement
- Actively build and maintain close networking relationships in the community and with individuals/organizations such as ministers, churches, florists, civic groups, Hospices, community leaders and influencers
- Administer work schedules of the personnel of the funeral home
- Foster strong relationships with vendors and suppliers
- Maintain up to date knowledge of laws and policies
- Screening candidates, hiring and training a skilled and effective staff, disciplinary action and employee reviews
Requirements & Qualifications:
- Virginia Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer (or ability to obtain a reciprocal license in a timely manner)
- Management experience preferred, but not necessarily required for the right candidate
- Demonstrated leadership ability
- Honesty, integrity and trustworthiness among co-workers, management, and client families
- High attention to detail and follow through
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and listening skills and ability to interact and collaborate effectively with others in a team atmosphere
- Proficient computer/technology skills
- Provide excellent service to every family, every time
- Valid Virginia Driver’s License with good driving record
