Luther Easley Spencer, Jr.
After a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s, Easley Spencer, 88, passed away on January 17, 2025.
He was born in Richmond, Virginia, the son of Luther E. and Florence Spencer. He is survived by his children, Rusty Spencer (Tracy) and Melissa Simms (Billy); grandchildren, Rachael Spencer and Harrison and Dillon Simms. In addition to his parents, Easley was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Patricia R. Spencer, and his sister, Ann S. McRee.
Easley participated in the Cadet Corps while at John Marshall High School before transferring and graduating in 1955 from Christchurch High School, where he was co-captain of the football team and a member of the student council, discipline committee, and honor council.
In 1959, he graduated from Richmond Professional Institute with a Bachelor of Science in Business. He worked full-time with his mother in the family business, Spencer Casket Company, for numerous years before becoming President. Easley was devoted to his customers. For years, he hosted a Harvest Festival Parade party where he invited customers and their families to watch the parade as it went down the Boulevard in front of the casket company.
Easley was a veteran of the United States Army. He was an active Shriner for over 60 years and helped with many fish fries, yard sales, and other events. He was a former president of the Virginia Funeral Sales Supply Association and West End Catholic Men’s Association. He also was a member of the West Richmond Businessmen’s Association for 56 years.
In his free time, he enjoyed snow skiing, saltwater fishing, yard work, growing vegetables in his garden, feeding the ducks coming into the yard from the creek in the back, walking and biking in the neighborhood, and visiting with neighbors. He especially enjoyed spending time with friends and family at his river house in Gloucester Point.
The family would like to thank Easley’s Ginter Park neighbors who looked out for him after Pat passed away; Sunrise Villa Tuckahoe Assisted Living, where he enjoyed all the social activities; Our Lady of Hope, where he went for rehab and nursing care; and Henrico Doctors Cardiac ICU and Affinity Hospice for making Dad comfortable at the end of his life.
A gathering of friends and family will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 28, at Bliley’s Central, 3801 Augusta Ave, and a private burial will take place the following day. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
