Wilbur Carrington Whitten, Jr.

Wilbur Carrington Whitten, Jr., 91, of Forest, passed away Tuesday, December 6, 2022 at his residence.

Born in Lynchburg, March 16, 1931, he was the son of the late Wilbur C. “Red” Whitten and Louise Poole Whitten. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Beverly Jean Whitten; his sister, Mary Lynn Whitten and his brother, Franklin Hardwell Whitten.

Wilbur was a 1949 graduate of E.C. Glass High School and a graduate of Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1953. He earned his Master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Michigan and his PhD in Mathematics from the University of Pittsburgh in 1961. He was a research professor in the field of Geometric Topology and began his 30-year career at the University of Southwestern Louisiana, now University of Louisiana in 1965. He was an avid Bluegrass fan and enjoyed practicing with his banjo. He proudly served his country in the US Army. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his son, Paul C. Whitten and his wife Marnie of Lynchburg; his daughter, Jennifer A. Whitten and her partner Michael McElheny of Cleveland, OH; his brother, Thomas P. Whitten of Beaufort, SC; five grandchildren, Tyler Whitten, Brandon Whitten, Hannah Knowles and her husband Bryce, Avery Whitten and Andrew Whitten and one great grandchild, Colvin Knowles.

A service celebrating his life will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 11, 2022 at Whitten Timberlake Chapel with Celebrant Polly Starnes officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
