Meredith Hawkins Neal
Meredith Hawkins Neal, 90, departed this life on August 26, 2022.
She was born in Jonesville, SC, on June 8, 1932, the oldest child of John Roba Hawkins and Mary Elizabeth Broderick Hawkins.
Meredith was a graduate of Schoolfield High School class of 1950. There she met the love of her life, Carlton Neal. They married on October 14, 1950. They spent more than 50 years together and had three children before he passed on July 14, 2005.
Beloved in Danville, where she spent the majority of her life, she was known to keep in touch with friends and loved ones and inform those close to her of their lives and accomplishments. She worked for many years at Peoples Bank (now Carter Bank & Trust) and was a member of West Main Baptist Church.
Meredith and her husband Carlton spent several years at Topsail Island. She amassed an impressive collection of shark’s teeth during her time living by the water, a testament to her love of the ocean and her tremendous patience and grace. She was happiest when family visited and she taught all her children and grandchildren to search for those small treasures in the sand.
Survivors include her daughter, Cindy Neal, a son, David Neal (Christi); a sister, Joyce H.Cowan; a grandson, Chris Neal (April); four granddaughters, Dr. Elizabeth N. Sabato, DDS (James), Oliva Neal, Harleigh Esparza, Kendyl Neal; and three great-grandchildren, Rebecca Neal, J.J. and Luca Sabato. She is also survived by two sisters-in-laws, Jane Hawkins, Deborah Hawkins, and special friends, Vera Knight and Carolyn Miles.
In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by a son, Rick Neal; and three brothers, Jack, Frank, and Raymond Hawkins.
Her family’s accomplishments brought her the greatest joy and she valued her family above all else. She will be deeply missed by those whose lives she touched, which are numerous.
