    November 14, 2023

On November 12, 2023 at the age of 94, James Osmond (Sonny) Ash, of Callao, VA, transitioned from time into eternity. Sonny was raised in Perrin, VA by his father, James Henry Ash, and his mother, Marie Bristow Ash, both of whom predeceased him. After graduating from Fork Union Military Academy in 1947, he attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University. From 1950-1953, he served his country in the United States Coast Guard. He later graduated from the Echols College of Mortuary Science following in the footsteps of his grandfather in serving the people living in the community during their times of loss. In 1960, he became a co-owner in the Jones-Ash Funeral Home and also owned James O. Ash Memorials, both in Rainswood, VA.

In addition to serving his community through funeral service, Sonny was also active in the Lions Club, was a member of the Achilles Masonic Lodge 281, the Westmoreland Masonic Lodge 212, and the Shriners. Sonny served on the Fork Union Military Academy Board of Trustees for eight years and served for seven years on the Virginia Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers, including one year as President.

Sonny loved his Lord. He was active in Melrose United Methodist Church, including serving as a trustee for the church’s cemetery. He was also active at Lakewood Park United Methodist Church in Fort Pierce, FL while spending the winter months in Florida. He was deeply touched when the United Methodist Men at Lakewood Park UMC recognized him as a Life Member in 2012.

Sonny also loved his family. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Jackson Ash; his children, Pamela C. Ash (Andrew W. Gallagher), James B. Ash, Gen A. Hahn (Kim), Andrew H. Jones (Sue), and Beth Jones Childs. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Matthew Jones (Nicole Drozd), Kyle Jones (Becky), Tollie Appleby (Phillip), Elizabeth Winyall (Davey), and Parker Childs. In addition, he absolutely adored his great grandchildren, Owen, Jackson, Logan, Ashlynn, Brooks, Cathryn, Leah, and Gabe. He was also predeceased by his two sisters, Lavinia Ash Stuart and Lois Marie Ash Carr.

Visitations will be held on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, from 3:00-4:00PM and 6:00-8:00PM at Melrose United Methodist Church, 1317 Lewisetta Rd., Lottsburg, VA 22511, with a Masonic Service being held at 7:00PM. July 24, 2023

Travis A. Smith, 40, of Eagle Rock, finally received his healed body on Thursday, July 20, 2023. Affectionately known by his family as “Jake”, a nickname his Grandma Smith gave him when he was young, was born April 21, 1983 to Dennis Smith and the late Linda Huff Wyatt. In addition to his mom, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, James Essie Brown Smith and Mary Jane “Janie” Elizabeth Deacon Smith, Lawrence Edwin and Bessie Scott Huff, and Billy and Fleta Newcomb. Travis was a 2001 James River Alumni and “retired” from Gala/Maag with 12 years of service “to the day” being the last of the Smith family that was employed there since the doors were open. Family was everything to “Jake” and it meant alot to him to follow in his grandfather’s, father’s, and uncle’s footsteps once he found his way to Gala after working at the cement plant and Groendyk. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, Nascar, spending time with his family and most importantly his son. Left to cherish his wonderful and loving memory are his son and “Bubby”, Logan; wife, Karen; bonus daughter, Kayla; dad, Dennis; sister, Heather and her boyfriend, Kevin; nieces, Tory (Zac) and Zoey (Tayler); great-nephews, Jayce, Easton, and Grayson; numerous aunts and uncles including, Diane and Gary Walker, Don and Alice Smith, Dale and Sandy Smith, Gary and Delma Tingler, Andy and Jane Huff; numerous loving cousins including, Jeff, Tracey, Sonya, Andy, Matthew, Robbie, Troy and Sarah; his in-law family, Ray and Bobbi, Jim and Debi, Kevin and Katie, Aunt Jane, Chris & Kim; special family friends, the Alls family; numerous amazing friends, “Woodchuck’s” Gala/Maag work buddies; and the Buchanan Moose Lodge including the Race Pool Gang. Travis touched many lives, had many dear friends, and will be terribly missed. It was this large family and numerous friendships that gave him the strength to fight cancer as long as he did. Visitation will be held from 12-2pm with Memorial Services at 2pm on Saturday, July 29, 2023 at the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home with Pastor Dave Mucha officiating. Flowers are beautiful and very much appreciated, but it would mean more to send a loving donation to the Cancer Center in Atlanta that gave Travis all the time they could. The family would like to thank each and every one who prayed, sent cards, called, and just kept us in their thoughts. Also, special thanks to Sarah with Good Samaritan Hospice for her loving care during this difficult short time. Online condolences may be made at www.botetourtfuneralhome.com or 540-254-3000
